Don’t just teach people, give them tools

Hasil adalah keseimbangan antara SDM dan sistem.

Program pengembangan SDM memang bermanfaat – untuk jangka panjang.

Namun jika menginginkan perubahan cepat – sistem yang tepat-lah jawabannya.

Don’t Just Teach People, Give Them Tools

Coach Cynthia | December 20, 2011

In owning and running my small business, there are many times when I feel tired. Tired of repeating myself, tired of correcting simple mistakes and tired of hearing the same problems over and over again.

My “A-ha!” moment came while reading a book called “Mastering the Rockefeller Habits” by Verne Harnish, the founder of Young Entrepreneurs Organization.

“Don’t bother teaching people,” he said, “Give them tools.”

My mind flashed back to instances when I painstakingly repeated my instructions, trying to get my people to understand the “why” behind the process, and educating my employees to try to lift them up to “another level.” And while all of that is nice and necessary if I want to develop my people, it is slow.

Now I realize results come from a balance of people and systems. Since “system” has become a pretty widely used words, I here specifically mean “tools.” Personnel development drives the motivation and long-term competency needed to maintain performance, while tools give people a quick way to get results now. People learn faster when they have tools they can use and practice with, in addition to being taught by their seniors.

Ask yourself these questions the next time you face a challenge at work:

1.Have I been teaching too much or have I created tools for people to implement what I want them to?

2.Are my tools easy to understand and at their level of competency?

3.Am I also using my own tools to show them how it’s done?
